On Wednesday, Sukesh Gupta, a 34-year-old college dropout was arrested after a complaint was lodged by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).  Gupta was acting as an Ayurveda doctor and “practising” in a health clinic in the Shivshahi area of Malad for the past four years.

According to the official, the arrest was made recently as a part of a joint operation by the Dindoshi Police and the BMC’s P/North Ward. The accused had been given a warning to stop the practice, following which he closed his clinic but re-opened it after 6 months. BMC had been verifying the qualifications of doctors in its jurisdiction after coming across instances where such treatments were being done by people with a fake degree.

Gupta was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act.Primary investigation revealed that Gupta had put up a BAMS degree certificate at his clinic and an investigation was being conducted to find out from where he had obtained it.
